Chapter 1: Left At The Door Typical rainy afternoons in New York City, same old busy city, same sounds, same smells. Life seems so monotonous around here, especially for the folks here, at the 27th precinct in the Bronx. Same amounts of paper work, piled up day after day, the same low toned hustle and bustle of the broken down precinct. Quiet, except for the occasional street punk that was brought in after being caught shop lifting or some other ‘low’ crime. Other then that, it seemed like this was the way life would be from now on. Or, would it? “Morning ,Ryo” Dee said looking up from his news paper and his cup of coffee. Ryo stopped and looked at him, examining the scene before him. “Oh im sure it is a good morning Dee, except for the fact that its pouring rain outside, and...you seem to look very comfortable sitting at my desk reading my news paper” Ryo said in a semi-annoyed tone. “Well aren’t we in a cheerful mood this morning, what’s the matter, wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Dee asked getting up. Ryo sighed, taking off his coat hanging it up. “Just let it go, ok? It’s a day I wish I were home in bed with a good book” Ryo said. “In bed with a book? If I were you id wanna be in bed with someone..worth cuddling with” Dee said coming up behind him wrapping his arms around him cuddling him in the childish way he always seemed to do. Ryo blushed and stepped away going back to his desk.“Hey come on, enough of that” he said with a shy smile. “What? Its not like no one doesn’t know about us” Dee said. Dee narrowed his eyes and walked over to Ryo’s desk placing his hands down. “Why? Are you shy about it?” Ryo looked up. “Or are you just, ashamed?” Dee asked seriously. Ryo blushed a bit and looked down. “Its not..that im ashamed Dee. Its more like..im just a bit nervous about letting everyone know” he looked back up. “Im sure you understand that” Dee stood straight and crossed his arms. “Sorry, I haven’t been one to be ashamed of what I feel. I’ve always been open with how I feel, you know that” he said. Ryo smiled. “Yeah you are, I know that very well. And I respect that Dee, so that’s why I wish that you understand how I feel..” there was a short pause. “How you feel..about us?” Dee asked. Ryo nodded and went back to the paperwork. Dee sighed and pulled up a chair and sat next to Ryo. “So..your not ashamed?” Dee asked. Ryo nodded, not seeming to sure about it himself. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t. Dee stared at him for a good while and Ryo turned to get something from the drawer. “Is there...something else?” he asked. Dee shook his head. “Then..I’d suggest you’d get back to work. You know how the chief gets Dee” he said smiling. “Ah chief, schmief who cares what the walrus has to say” he said shifting his eyes towards the chiefs office. “Dee, please, he might hear you” Ryo said, motioning for him to lower his voice. “Ah then let him hear me” he said a bit louder. Ryo sighed and tried his best to hide behind his paper work when he noticed a few of his co-workers looking in to see what the noise was about. “Let the whole precinct hear me for all I care and” Dee turned to Ryo with that grin that let Ryo know Dee was gonna do something to embarrass the hell out of him then concluded “let them know that I love...” BLAM! Ryo got up and looked over his desk and saw J.J and Dee in a heap on the floor. “Me! You were going to say that you loved me right, Dee?!” J.J asked hugging and nuzzling him. “Hell no you little ingrate now get the hell away from me!” Dee said trying to pry J.J off of him. “ oh stop that you know you don’t mean what you say! Deep down I know you truly still love me” J.J looked over at Ryo and glared. “Even if...even if...oh! I cant even say it ! It breaks my heart to even think about you and him in the same room!” J.J said embracing Dee tighter. “J.J your being stupid! Now get the hell off of me!” Ryo stood up seeming a bit upset. He picked up the finished paperwork, stacked them and walked out. “Hey..what’s wrong?” Dee asked. “Nothing” Ryo said calmly, walking out. “Damn it J.J look what you’ve done, you’ve gone and made him upset” Dee said getting up and going after him. J.J watched them leave and stood up walking over to the door, standing there. “You never seem to care..if im upset, Dee” he said slowly going back to his desk. “Hey what was that all about?” Dee asked putting his hand on Ryo’s shoulder. “I said it was nothing Dee and I meant it” he said smiling almost shyly. “If that isn’t the biggest lie I’ve ever heard you tell then I don’t know what is” Dee said. “ Ryo looked down. “You know what it is Dee, even though I know it doesn’t mean anything..I still can’t help but feel..” Dee stopped him. “Jealous?..” Ryo nodded. “You have nothing to worry about Ryo, J.J knows that... and you should too” Dee said with a reassuring smile. “I know..and im sorry” Dee playfully hit him over the head. “Stop apologizing would yah? It annoys the crap outta me” Dee said walking ahead of him. As Ryo watched him walk away he smiled and laughed a bit, he couldn’t help but feel lucky. After all, he had Dee. ---------- The afternoon came, the day remained the same, monotonous as ever. The morning paperwork was finished. Ryo picked up the phone and decided to check in on Bikky. “Bikky should be home from school by now, im gonna give him a call and see if he’s ok” he dialed the number and waited. Dee was in the corner tilting back and forth in his chair. “Hello, Bikky? How you doing?............that’s good, how was school?.........fine....oh that’s good you passed. See I told you that studying would help. You should thank Lai........Well I should be getting off work about 8 tonight.....oh, well that’s fine, who’s going to be there?.......how is Carol by the way?....good.......alright that’s fine, not too late ok?....ok, and be careful, call me if you need anything....ok, bye” he hung up the phone and leaned back in his chair. “So, how is the little demon monkey?” Dee asked tossing a little rubber band ball in the air. Ryo smiled. “He’s fine. He passed his mid-terms, he’ll be at Lai’s house tonight, he should be back by dinner though” Dee nodded. “The boy’s just about 18 years old and your still checking up on him." “Of course, I did take him in you know, so he is my responsibility” Ryo said giving him a look. Dee grumbled a bit. Just then the PA system turned on, announcing that all available units were to report down town, to respond to a possible bomb threat. “Aw, man, watch it be another bluff” Dee stood up. “I wouldn’t bet on it, even if it is we need to follow procedure got it?” Ryo said going to the door getting his coat. “Hey, it’s me” Dee said rushing out before him. Ryo sighed and grabbed his coat. “Yeah, that’s what I’m afraid of” he ran out the door after Dee, few of the other cops following behind him. By the time they got there it was about 3:30 in the afternoon. Dee and Ryo pulled up to a beat up office building. “Why would anyone wanna bomb this du-“ Dee was cut off by a miniature explosion that was on the 4th floor. Ryo and Dee were ducked behind their car. “What you were you saying earlier about it being ‘just another bluff’?” ryo asked. “Oh shut up” Dee said looking up over the hood of the car. A few officers went in and Dee got up but was pulled back down. “Dee wait, we haven’t been given orders yet” he said. “We don’t have time for that” Dee said getting back up rushing into the building. Ryo waited a minute then got up and went after him. “He’s gonna be the end of me, I know it” The other officers were treading silently through the building, carefully making their way to the 4th floor. “Dee, Im gonna chek out this floor, just to be safe. Ryo said stopping at the 3rd floor. You gonna be ok?” Dee asked Ryo as he was heading to the 4th floor. Ryo nodded. “I’ll be ok” he said. Dee nodded and slowly started up the stairs. Ryo watched him until he was out of sight then stood the to the right of the door, took a breath and opened the door, slowly stepping inside, making sure no one was there before entering. Dee had entered the 4th floor. The smell of gun powder filled the air. He soon spotted debris on the floor, apparently were the bomb had went off. “Dee, where the hell are you?!” It was the chief talking to him through the radio. Before Dee answered Dee turned off his radio and continued to walk slowly and quietly through the hallway making his way toward the hole in the wall. He waited a few minutes before jumping infront of it aiming his gun straight. As the smoke cleared more, he saw a few bodies laying in heaps on the floor. He checked each of them for a pulse but they were all dead. “Dammit...” Dee said to himself as he made his way over the bodies and the Debris. He turned when he heard a sound coming from the room next door. “That was just a warning shot, you hear me down there!” he looked over and saw the bomber holding a young girl hostage. Dee ducked back behind the wall and turned his radio back down, lowering the volume. “Ryo, Ryo come in” ......... “Im here, what is it Dee?” “I need you to go back downstairs and tell the chief to send someone in” Dee said. “..send someone in? Who? What’s going on?” Dee peeked back around the doorway again then pulled back. “There’s a guy in here holding a girl hostage, said that the bomb that went off was just a warning. I think that means there’s more in the building” Dee said. “Alright Dee, just sit tight and be careful” Dee turned the radio off and leaned back against the wall. All he could do now was wait and hope his partner got help in time. Meanwhile, Ryo was rushing downstairs back out to the blockade. “Chief” Ryo said running out of the building. “Jesus Mclean where the hell have you been?” he asked. “Please, not now chief. Dee’s up on the 4th floor. He said that he has a visual on the bomber and heard him say that first bomb was only a warning” he said panting. “That means there’s other bombs...”he looked up at the building and called an officer over. “Sir?” he asked. “Call into headquarters. Tell them to send over the special weapon and tactics team. Tell them we got a pretty big problem” he said . The officer nodded and went to his car to radio it in. Ryo looked at him then looked back towards the building heading back towards it. “Mclean don’t you dare. Your staying here I already got one of my officers in there I don’t need you goin in too” The chief said. Ryo looked back at him. “Dee will be fine he’s been in this situation before” Ryo looked down. “I know, that’s what Im afraid of” At that moment Ryo remembered the last time Dee was caught up in a bombing situation like this, he remembered how scared he was when he went in to rescue Bikky and when Bikky came out without Dee, the bomb then going off. “I wont...” Ryo said. The chief looked at him. “I wont go through that again, I almost lost him before and im not gonna lose him now” with that he ran back into the building. ![]() Part of Baptism-of-Blood Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Sanami Matoh, BE x BOY Magazine, or Tokyopop, or any subsidiary companies and agencies of Sanami Matoh, BE x BOY Magazine, or Tokyopop.
